Every Saturday I am featuring a different small business, getting to know a little more about the business and the people behind the brands! This week I interview the lovely Rosie from Bubbuh
I hope that by reading this interview you may find another small business to support or if you're interested in maybe starting your own business, you may find some inspiration here too...
Hi, I’m Rosie the mind & mama behind Bubbuh. We offer unique, modern and ethical chilrenswear clothing and toys, all handpicked by myself. All clothing is Organic cotton or bamboo and the brands we work with are also fellow independents, we’re about bringing you quality, ethical products for your little Bubbuh’s and supporting fellow small businesses.
Can you tell us a fun fact about youself?
I once flew to Australia for a work trip for 3 days and survived with no jet lag!
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Reality TV, mainly ones that are associated with dating, Love Island, Dinner Date, Celebs go dating, love a bit of cheesy tele!
Oh and giant chocolate buttons, a pregnancy craving that never went away!
What makes your business a little different from the rest?
All the brands we work with are fellow small businesses, so we try to support independents by bringing them under one shop. As well as this, all the products are ethically made to a high quality so, we can assure they will last wash after wash.
We like to think the products we sell will get handed down to younger siblings, friends, cousins, nieces/nephews. We try and promote a ‘Buy Less, Buy Better’ mantra as we know how damaging the clothing industry is to our planet so, we want to do our bit to encourage people to try & think more about where their clothes / children’s clothes are coming from.
What TV show could you happily lose a day bingeing on?
I know Nikki @ Rose and Guy said this in last weeks interview, but FRIENDS all the way!! Such a classic and an easy watch, just love all the characters Rachel being a firm fave!
What is an absolute non-negotiable in your day?
A shower first thing in the morning and my Liz Earle face cleansing routine, I can’t start my day until I have done both these things – even sitting at home during lockdown!
Tell us one thing about your business that you are most proud of?
Running Bubbuh online and doing events (prior COVID) on the side of my very busy & demanding full time job as a Fashion Buyer, amongst commuting to London from Sussex and regular travel in and outside the UK. Now juggling our new addition to the family, Luna-Vallis and all that comes with becoming a new mum!
What topic would you speak about if you were asked to give a TED talk on something outside of your main area of expertise?
Probably because I am in the midst of it now, but becoming mum, babies, labour & hypnobirthing! I could talk about it all day long, I was lucky enough to have a great experience with pregnancy & labour, loved being pregnant and actually quite miss my bump now! However, saying that not in this sweltering heat wave!
What’s your favourite ever product that you currently sell or have sold?
I have two (if that’s allowed! )
Our Freya Lillie Frill Linen button back romper’s, their quality & design is impeccable and they’re such a classic piece that can be worn all year round, summer on their own or winter layered with tights and a long sleeve top! Also, a perfect hand me down!
No.2 favourite is our Baby Mori Zip up sleepsuits, they’re super soft and after having Luna these sleepsuits get used so much, they wash well and the zips make it so easy & quick to get her dressed for bed after her bath, when her patience is wearing thin to be fed! Demanding little one that she is!
What is the best or most worthwhile investment you’ve made? Could be an investment of money, time, energy, or other re-source. How did you decide to make the investment?
Freya Positive birthing app – literally THE best £2.99 I have ever spent! Couldn’t recommend it enough and I put it down to the breathing exercises on this app that got me all the way through my labour, to so nearly having Luna-Vallis on our bathroom floor – to my partner’s horror!!
What’s been the biggest change to you and your business during this crazy Covid-19 lockdown?
Becoming a mum for the first time!! Our little Luna-Vallis arrived on the 1st March so just before we all went into lockdown. It’s been a challenge to get my head around becoming a mum, (and becoming a mum in a national pandemic) as well as learning how best to juggle motherhood and running my own business, as well as general life chores like keeping a house clean & cooking!! My partner has been so supportive throughout so couldn’t have managed it all without him, to be honest I’m still trying to work out how to juggle it all, do you ever?! Lol
What’s your favourite thing about running your own business?
Speaking and meeting our customers, seeing our products on their little Bubbuh’s and seeing them enjoy them is the most rewarding! It is true what they say, we definitely do a little dance every time we receive an order, that excited feeling never goes away!
What do you or would you outsource if you could?
Finances!! I’ve never been good at managing money, hence my main career as a buyer is all about spending & making money, that’s definitely what I am better at rather than managing it! Lol
Who or what inspires you?
My mum, growing up she was always such a hard worker, juggling bringing up three children alongside building a professional career, as well as helping out at our school as Governor, no idea how she juggled it all! She has always taught me to be independent and to always give things a go, it’s the only way you can learn and grow!
Do you have a favourite quote or just one you really like? Why do you like it?
‘When it rains look for rainbows, when it’s dark look for stars’ – Always try to look for the positives in any situation as hard as it sometimes may be!
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out with their business or wanting to start, what would it be?
Go for it, never give up and focus on doing you! You will always come up against hurdles and you will make mistakes but as long as you learn and grow from them and it’s something you are passionate about it will you will succeed! Always try to visualise yourself / the business where you would dream it to be and it will happen (I believe), and just keep going! These things take time, we’ve been going for 2 years now whilst working full time, and Bubbuh is still my ‘side hustle’ but one day it will be my full time job *fingers crossed*
Do you have any new products that you’re excited to tell people about?
We’ve recently added a Nursery range to our offer, starting with a beautiful Scandi style brand called GAMCHA, they’re all beautifully handmade felt mobiles and wall hangings. We have the safari mobile and flamingo wall hanging in our daughter’s nursery and the elephant head in our living room (not just for babies rooms!) and we are so in love, they’re the finishing touch to her Nursery!
